EO Applications Engineer Job Requisition ID: 20556Job posted: 6 May 2026Closing date: 27 May :59 CET/CESTPublication: Internal & ExternalType of appointment: 4 years, extendable to indefiniteDirectorate: Earth Observation Programme (EOP)Workplace: Frascati, ItalyGrade band: A2–A4Location: ESRIN, Frascati, Italy Role Overview Reporting to the Head of the Enterprise Section in the Climate Action, Sustainability and Science Department within the Directorate of Earth Observation Programme (EOP), the EO Applications Engineer will develop and deliver innovative Earth‑Observation (EO) applications and analytical solutions. The role focuses on removing structural barriers to adoption of EO‑based services and producing new methods that integrate EO data with non‑EO data streams. Key Responsibilities Identify partner‑funded activities where custom EO‑based analytics can enhance overall outcomes. Specify, set up and manage ESA‑funded actions to develop methods that integrate EO data, non‑EO data (e.g., IoT sensor networks, transponder data) and novel modelling approaches such as agent‑based models. Work with priority industry sectors (manufacturing, chemicals, construction) to produce next‑generation analytics that support climate‑resilient production and supply‑chain operations. Manage tenders that support the wider interests of the Earth Action pillar of the FutureEO programme. Cooperate with complementary initiatives within EOP (Digital Twin Earth, InCubed, Scout missions, Stepping Stones) and other ESA directorates (Commercialisation, Industry & Competitiveness, Technology & Engineering, and Quality). Co‑ordinate with key stakeholders to establish and consolidate requirements for geoinformation products and services. Draft technical specifications for applications and services that meet identified priority gaps. Work with the European EO and non‑EO industry to define operations scenarios and technical approaches for delivering a portfolio of EO‑based services. Set up and manage industrial procurements for development activities addressing industrial competitiveness priorities and department‑level calls and tenders. Interface with the EOP Ground Segment and Mission Management Department to ensure consistency with complementarity ground‑segment capability development. Interface with ESA and EU industrial development and commercialisation initiatives to identify and capitalize on successful project transfer and scaling opportunities. Contribute to ESA communication efforts that promote EO results, mission achievements and societal benefits of EO. Technical Competencies Experience with space‑based applications in fields such as environmental management, climate adaptation, natural resources management, infrastructure management, urban development or societal resilience. Experience in engaging public and private sector stakeholders to stimulate broader uptake of space‑based capabilities. Experience establishing and implementing projects that exploit Earth Observation data. Knowledge of ESA EO programmes and activities, especially those supporting the European space industry. Additional Requirements Experience setting up and running ESA procurements and managing ESA contracts for space‑application developments. Strong problem‑solving skills for day‑to‑day operational challenges. Strong results orientation with the ability to set priorities and present practical solutions orally and in writing.
